“The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15)
Mark’s Gospel opens with a royal proclamation: the King has arrived, and his reign is near. His first word to the people who will become his church is a summons to turn from sin and trust the good news. Repentance and faith are the daily rhythm of life under this King. He called ordinary fishermen to follow him, and their calling became their mission: he would make them fishers of people. The church is born when everyday people drop their nets and go where he says. What Jesus did in Capernaum he still does today: he teaches with authority, touches the untouchable, and lifts the fevered so they can serve again.
Prayer: King Jesus, keep me close enough to follow you wherever you send me. Amen.
