“If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:21)
He had done everything right, keeping the commandments from his youth. Yet he still came to Jesus with one question: “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered with love and struck at the one thing he could not give up. The commandments had not saved him, and obedience had not satisfied him. Jesus was after his heart. The young man went away sad, because his treasure owned him. His story asks the same of us: will we answer his call?
Prayer: Lord, show me what I am holding back from you, and give me the courage to lay it down and follow you wholeheartedly. Amen.
