“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” — Matthew 9:9 (NIV)
Matthew collected taxes for Rome, and his own people despised him. He may have thought his past had settled his future. Jesus set no conditions. He simply said, “Follow me,” and Matthew got up and left the booth. Soon Jesus was eating at his table with other tax collectors and sinners, while the critics complained. He came for the sick, He said, for people who know they need mercy. If you feel disqualified, you are the kind of person Jesus calls. Get up from what has kept you stuck, and follow Him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me. Give me courage to get up and follow You today. Amen.
