Daily Devotional: Mark 12

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

A teacher of the law asked Jesus which commandment comes first. Jesus answered with the relationship that holds everything together: love God with all we are, and love the neighbor beside us. That is the whole life of the King and his Church. The Church begins with hearts turned toward God and hands turned toward one another. When love for God grows cold, love for people turns thin. Hold both together, and let the day take shape from them.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, our King, teach us to love you with what we have and our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.
